Christmas Greetings from the Libertarian Alliance

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Libertarian Alliance, I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous 2017.

I break from my usual custom of denouncing the year now passing as uniquely awful, and predicting worse in the year to come. Instead, I hail 2016 as a Year of Miracles, and look forward with uncommon optimism to 2017.

  1. Merry Christmas to all here. I was incensed to read that David Cameron had produced a Christmas message.

Why? He is not the Queen. Why is he producing a Christmas message? I don’t recall this having been done many years ago. A New Year message might be more appropriate if it focused on national issues in the year ahead and not on New Year greetings.

I do not approve of these self-important pompous utterances by politicians. Strange, it is not?, to see how Jeremy Corbyn is being attacked for the logical step of **not issuing a Christmas greeting to people he does not know**.

The content of Cameron’s Christmas message was absurd and offensive. To refer to England’s Christian heritage as a reason why England offers itself as “a successful home to people of all faiths and none” is confused. England had a Christian heritage precisely because it did not allow non-Christian faiths to flourish. We would have no common heritage at all if multiculturalism had been established as the national secular religion 1,000 years ago.

Christmas should not be used by politicians as a chance to issue snide messages that boil down to the need to delete our heritage.

I welcome Sean Gabb’s Christmas greetings, of course; the LA is not using Christmas to advance a political agenda in the way that Cameron is.

    • I didn’t know that he had issued one; I do not listen much to him as a rule, as is the right way to treat bureaucrats in general. In contrast it is probably right for The Queen to broadcast one, for in a philosophical sense she “knows” all her Subjects – at least for taxation purposes. Cameron might get away with doing a podcast for his electors [and also those who didn’t elect him] in Witney; I think that might be allowable.

  2. It has been a good year, on balance. Perhaps the best since 1989, politically.
A merry Christmas to lovers of liberty everywhere, and a happy 2017!

[and if this thread is recycled again in Christmases yet to come – “To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone — to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Theresa May, from the age of doublethink — greetings!”]
